Can You Tell Me A Little Bit About the History of the Taffy Shop?
Glad you asked. Here is a quick rundown of hows, whens, and whys!
- 1880. Salt Water Taffy was invented on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
- 1893. The Saltair Resort opened on the shores of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. It boasted rides, swimming, dining, music, and dancing on what was boasted as “the world’s largest dance floor”. They introduced salt water taffy to their guests. The taffy was pulled and cut by hand. It was an instant hit.
- 1920. Taffy was mechanized with machinery and they were able to produce more taffy to share with even more guests. There were over 500,000 visitors each year. It was dubbed the “Coney Island of the West”. Traditional flavors of taffy included Vanilla, Chocolate, Licorice, Cinnamon, Banana, Cherry, and Root Beer.
- 1925. The Saltair Resort caught fire and was destroyed by fire.
- 1926. A larger and better Saltair (Saltair II) was built and opened to the public. It included a more space for dances and music assemblies. The demand for taffy forced the owners to bring it back.
- 1927-1960. Hit by the Great Depression, World War II, another small fire, and a drought that left the shoreline a half a mile from the resort, Saltair floundered for decades.
- 1970. Saltair II caught fire and burned to the ground. For 13 years there was no Saltair to entertain the visitors of the Great Salt Lake.
- 1983. Once again, Saltair was rebuilt and opened its doors to the public. Unfortunately, right after the building was completed, Northern Utah experienced two years of flooding that caused the Great Salt Lake to rise to levels that cut off access roads to Saltair and flooded the building. The main pavilion was buried under five feet of water. Eventually the Governor installed massive pumps to send the water to the west desert but Saltair was closed for 10 years.
- 1993. Our owner purchased the Saltair Resort and reopened its doors to the public. It was primarily used as a concert venue and has seen performances from artists ranging from Bob Dylan to Kesha. Our owner not only opened the doors for concerts but he also reopened a concessions stand that brought Salt Water Taffy back to those hallowed shores.
- 1998. Taffy Shop sets up a website on what was called the “internet” in the hopes of sharing its taffy with more people around the world.
- 2000. Sales on the internet exceed sales from the concession stand. Taffy Shop relocates to a larger space and begins full-time shipping operations.
- Today. Taffy Shop has produced millions of pieces of taffy and now offers over 80 flavors of gourmet taffy. Our taffy has gone from the shores of the Great Salt Lake to the shores of the internet. The waves of the internet have allowed us to share smiles with people from countries all around the world. Deservedly so, we have people that specifically seek us out for our taffy and claim that it is the best in the world. It took persistence through several fires, several wars, floods, droughts, and dogged perseverance, but over a century of experimentation and customer feedback, we proudly boast that we offer the best taffy in the world.

Do You Offer Any Shipping Discounts or Promotions?
You probably know that shipping costs continue to rise, affecting many small-business owners such as ourselves. We know how much our customers dislike paying hefty shipping fees...and we feel the same.
So we do our very best to keep shipping costs to an absolute minimum. The least expensive shipping option (so inexpensive in fact, it is FREE) is to purchase at least $50 worth of taffy in your order. Larger orders like this allow us to absorb the shipping costs and give you the best deal possible. After all, it is tough to beat free!
Additionally, all standard orders under $50 are available for a flat rate of $5.
Do You Offer Expedited Shipping Options?
Yes, we do. We take pride in offering affordable standard shipping options. All orders above $50 are shipped for FREE via standard shipping.
If you need something a little quicker though, we do offer expedited options. Exact costs vary depending on your location and the shipping option chosen. This is not a profit center for us though, we simply pass the cost we pay to you.
